Paddling Bio

I started sea kayaking in June of 2016 and was hooked. I was able to take a class from Nigel Foster in late 2018 and that set me on 2 paths -one to be able to move a kayak as he does and two, to help bring those skills to others. In 2019 I picked up a Greenland paddle for the first time and since mid 2021 it is what I used exclusively, aside from when teaching certain strokes classes. in the past 2 years my coaching has taken me across the US, Canada (Eastern coast this Sept, Europe, and Asia with upcoming plans to be in South America next year. My approach to sea kayak instruction is to teach the skills AND the CONCEPTS behind the techniques. This provides my students a framework to use, empowering them to experiment and adapt skills to fit them and to problem solve. It allows for more intuitive paddling. If something feels right and works without being unsafe, do it! As students progress and paddle in bigger sea states, this concept-based discover learning approach allows them to adapt and find solutions when conditions don’t allow skills to be performed as they have been taught.

Who am I?

I am most at home on the water, sharing my passion with others. That could be teach, leading trips with local clubs, or simply joining a trip as a participant – whatever gets me on the water. Favorite sea states – strong winds, big current, and tide races, but I am equally at home on perfectly flat water continuing to work on and hone my own core skills. Home is just south of Seattle, WA – by way of AZ, NY, and NJ
