POSTPONED for 2021

A coach will be leading an expedition course at the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium 2021. Often on coaching journeys with the GLSKS, it comes up in discussions with students that they have never camped out of their kayak or planned a trip.

An expedition can be one of the most enjoyable things about sea kayaking. Traveling somewhere, under your own power with all of your gear in the kayak is one of the most transcendent experiences in our hustle bustle lives. Do you want to be untethered from land with no iPhone, no computer, and only a map and a compass to guide you? It’s the best but it also comes with some challenges of seamanship, risk management, paddling skills, and leadership when going afloat.

This course is intended to provide two days of on-water experience with sea kayak expeditions. We will plan an expedition in the vicinity of Grand Island.  Participants in the Expedition Course are required to attend Thursday’s training for all symposium students.  The expedition will begin Friday morning, camping on Grand Island Friday night and returning to Grand Marais Saturday in time for the Pasty Dinner.

The course will cover the following skills, plus a whole lot more.

We intend to do coaching on the move. We will of course take in the scenery, but we will not be doing a tour, or *just taking* in the sights. We will be working on skills for the entire two days.  We expect students to be self-sufficient and equipped to explore the wilderness.
